Through the ages, the saints have learned that they must wait for the promises of God to be fulfilled and that this may not happen in their lifetime (see Hebrews 11:13-16, 39-40). What God determined to reveal to Daniel should be enough for us. Thirdly (and most importantly), the prophecies of Daniel mean exactly what God says they mean, nothing more and nothing less. Dan 2:1-4 In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was troubled and he could not sleep. They acknowledging their inability are judged to die. The second time, the expression is used in reference to Daniel himself, as it will be used very frequently in Ezekiel to refer to this great prophet: So he came near to where I was standing, and when he came I was frightened and fell on my face; but he said to me, Son of man, understand that the vision pertains to the time of the end (Daniel 8:17). He distinguishes himself by his ability to overcome the whole earth, crushing it under foot. Chapter 7 - In the first vision Daniel sees the same kingdoms, but this time he sees them as beasts. Our study of this chapter will isolate what troubled Daniel about the future. That dream was read as our Scripture reading this morning. At the outset of the account of his vision, Daniel wants his reader to know the historical context in which this prophecy was given and to consider its interpretation and application in the light of that context. Those who will reign with Christ are those who have suffered (see Romans 8:17; Philippians 3:10-11; 2 Timothy 2:12). From an eternal perspective, the coming of Christ and His kingdom is but one coming. (9) The interpretation of Daniels vision comes in two parts, beginning with a general interpretation and then a more specific one based on Daniels questions. He will keep continual pressure on the saints of the Highest One to try to break and destroy and annihilate them. It's build upon the passage in Daniel 7 where he has a disturbing dream. God stirred up the sea, and from its foaming, raging waters came forth four horrifying beasts. 25 And he will speak out against the Most High and wear down the saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make alterations in times and in law; and they will be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time. Belshazzar came to power several years after the death of Nebuchadnezzar and seems to have turned completely away from the God of Israel. Two weeks ago, we quickly looked at the description of the beast that John sees in Revelation 13 and he described it as a composite of the first three beasts, the body of a leopard, the feet or paws of a bear, and the head and mouth of a lion. Robert L. (Bob)Deffinbaugh graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary with his Th.M. Daniel's prophecy was one of hope. The wrenching off of the wings and the transformation of the lion, making him stand on two legs and giving him the mind of a man was a picture of God humbling Nebuchadnezzar and then restoring him to his right mind, you can read about this in Daniel 4. Jesus applied this text to them, not as those who would enter into His kingdom, but as those who would be judged at His return. The words of Daniel which applied to the beasts now found application to them. At-A-Glance 1. 5. If you remember from two weeks ago the bear was raised up on one side, this was to indicate that one part of this united kingdom overshadowed the other portion. (11) A distinction is made between God the Fatherthe Ancient of Days and God the Sonthe Son of Manwith both playing a part in the establishment of the kingdom. Note that the description of the beasts is written in prose, while the description of the heavenly court in verses 9-10 and of the Son of Man in verses 13-14 is written in poetry form. 5 And behold, another beast, a second one, resembling a bear. During those days the revived Roman empire will be ruled by a confederation of ten kings as described by the ten toes of the statue of Daniel 2 and the ten horns of Daniels dream. Nebuchadnezzar died in 562 B.C., some 9 years before Belshazzars reign began. In the second scene, heaven calmly prepares for court, which will determine that the time for judgment has come. Lion - Babylon. These kingdoms go from bad to worse. 7 And it was given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them; and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him. The final outcome is Gods people under the Son of Man, Jesus Christ, will receive the kingdom. However, it must have been in the latter part of Nebuchadnezzar's reign. (3) These prophecies must be understood in light of their historical background as provided in Daniel, in the inspired revelation provided by other portions of Scripture, and the cautious use of supplementary information by reliable historical documents or study. No wonder interpreters differ about the details. He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come. 9 If any one has an ear, let him hear. The righteous will suffer. Hearing this, Nebuchadnezzar affirms that Daniel's god is "the God of gods and Lord of kings and revealer of mysteries". It not only bore witness to the conversion of this king, but encouraged all of the subjects of Babylonian rule to worship the God of Israel. The king knew that Daniel spoke the truth. Things are not as they appear to be! It is at this time that all human kingdoms will become subject to God and to the saints in the eternal kingdom, which the Son of Man will establish when He comes to the earth to judge and to rule. The first of Daniel's four beasts is "like a lion, and it had the wings of an eagle" ( Daniel 7:4 ). (5) What do the four beasts represent? Lets pray and ask God to teach us and guide us as we look at His prophetic word. 17 Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. Two major divisions comprise our text: (1) Daniels dreamverses 1-14 and (2) the interpretationverses 15-28. We are told the Old Testament prophet could not see the distance between the first and the second coming of our Lord, just as one cannot see the distance between two mountains, when viewed from afar. Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? Remembering this avoids confusion. (1) It follows the narrative concerning Mishael, Hananiah and Azariah in the matter of Nebuchadnezzar's golden image (Daniel 3). Chapter 2 contains a very significant prophecy, revealed by God to king Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel 7 indicates in the clearest way that prior to the coming of the kingdom of God the saints will suffer at the hand of the final horn and even be overpowered by him. How interesting! I also told you it corresponded to the dream of Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel chapter 2, but with more detail. Verse 17. As the boasting horn of Daniel 7 seems to be getting away with his blasphemies and his oppression of the saints, it seems to him he can do whatever he wishes, including the changing of times and law. La Habra, CA : The Lockman Foundation, 1995, [3]Walvoord, John F.; Zuck, Roy B.; Dallas Theological Seminary: The Bible Knowledge Commentary : An Exposition of the Scriptures. The second is Daniel's dream. Daniel went at once and obtained royal permission for more time, so that he could tell the king what the dream meant. During the times of the Gentiles four empires, Daniel was told, would rise and rule over the land and people of Israel. We have already seen time frame in Revelation referring to half of the seven-year tribulation. The entire empire was conquered between 334 and 330 B.C., just four years. The toasting of the gods of the Babylonians with the sacred temple vessels, recorded in chapter 5, may have been Belshazzars final act of blasphemy. The vision recorded in chapter 8 took place in the third year of Belshazzar. So the king summoned the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers to tell him what he had dreamed. God would strike him down in the moment of His choosing to silence him once and for all and put an end to his kingdom. And the dragon gave him his power and his throne and great authority. 5. A true account of what happened can only be gathered by reading Daniel 2:18; Daniel 2:28 by the side of this verse. Editing is often evident in the Bible (see John 20:30-31; 31:25). Twice in chapter 7 Daniel speaks of his distress: As for me, Daniel, my spirit was distressed within me, and the visions in my mind kept alarming me (verse 15). Because of this we can have a greater understanding of this dream than Daniel did. According to verse 1, the written record of the revelation Daniel received in his first night vision is but a summary of the prophecy he received. 76 It is not altogether accurate to refer to chapters 1-6 as historical and 7-12 as prophetic. What so upset Daniel about the future? 1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of Median descent, who was made king over the kingdom of the Chaldeans 2 in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, observed in the books the number of the years which was revealed as the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet for the completion of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely, seventy Nebuchadnezzar may have started badly, but by the time we read of him in Daniel 4 he seems to be a true believer in God, urging the citizens of his kingdom to worship and serve Him. Should we be troubled as well? While God tells neither Daniel nor us that this beast represents Nebuchadnezzar, He does reveal that the head of gold in the vision of the great statue was Nebuchadnezzar (2:36-38). The coming of the Son of Man is represented as one coming, and not two. According to our text, the prophecies of Daniel 7 will not be fulfilled for a considerable period of time. Before the kingdom of God is established on the earth, four earthly kingdoms will rise and fall. (2) Chapters 7 and 8, while written in different languages, are written during the reign of Belshazzar and somehow linked by the author in Daniel 8:1. Episode 5 of "How I Met Your Father" Season 2 tested the friendships of everyone in the group. The next portion of the statue in Daniel 2 was the chest and arms of silver which represented the Medo-Persian Empire which was even larger than the Babylonian empire. At least the final portion of chapter 7 has not been fulfilled. Thus, the vision is yet unfulfilled in terms of its major emphasis. He would rise from the dead (12:40). Would this horn Daniels vision revealed oppose the people of God and even blaspheme God Himself? Looking about with its numerous eyes, no one can escape his look or hide from him.80 With its mouth, the beast continues to speak boastfully. (1) The Book of Daniel is a part of the Holy Scriptures, and thus inspired, accurate, and trustworthy. Desiring a more detailed explanation, he apparently asked for one and received it. (1) The troubling dream. Four kings will establish four kingdoms, and some of these kingdoms have a number of kings. (7) Prophecy is revealed, not to give us the particulars of things to come, but to change our perspective. The statue represented the kingdoms of the earth. Never in the history of the Roman empire has this happened so it is yet future. In chapter 2 we read that Nebuchadnezzar was troubled and terrified by his dream, we read here in verse 15 that Daniel was distressed in his spirit because he knew that God had just shown him a panorama of tremendous events yet future and Daniels distress was his lack of understanding his dream. Suddenly, the boasting beast is silenced by death, and his body is cast into the burning fire. The day of judgment is still future and has not yet been fulfilled. Part of the dream seemed good, and part of it seemed bad. Prophecy is always practical and relevant to the person(s) receiving it. Many Old Testament prophets shared Daniels distress as a result of the prophecies they received and often conveyed to others.74 Why does the prophecy of Daniel 7 cause this godly man so much consternation? In the latter days, an unusually powerful and evil king will arise, who will blaspheme God and oppress the people of God. 77 According to Baldwin, This verse [13] has been the subject of more scholarly papers than any other in the book, so indicating its centrality, not only for Daniel but for the New Testament also. Baldwin, p. 142. It seems that three of the kings try to resist him and he overthrows them by force. As Daniel sought to discover more truth about the fourth beast he added some details that he had left out of his first description. Different from the first three, this beast seems uglier, more powerful, and much more hostile toward God and His saints. Nebuchadnezzar became distressed when he received his first night vision (2:1) because he did understand some of his dream. This angel, beginning in the second half of verse 23 is describing the revived Roman empire which is yet future. Neither peer opposition nor the king's new law (chapter 6) greatly disturbed Daniel. 74 The personal cost of receiving divine revelation is never underestimated in the Old Testament (cf. The Ancient of Days is a designation for God, not found elsewhere in the Bible. Verses 1-14 contain the vision which God gave to Daniel. The angel that Daniel was talking with gave Daniel greater detail concerning the fourth beast; he described this fourth beast as a fourth kingdom coming from the earth, it will be different from all the rest, this kingdom will devour the whole earth and tread it down and crush it. Alexander the Great's empire and its divisions after his death were predicted long in advance in Daniel 11. 13 I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him.77 14 And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations, and men of every language Might serve Him. 1. (2) The prophecies of Daniel must be understood in relationship to and in light of the other prophecies of Daniel. When He came with His kingdom, they would be sure to recognize Him (24:27). When that day comes for them, it is too late to repent. Thus he said: The fourth beast will be a fourth kingdom on the earth, which will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth and tread it down and crush it. Editing allows an author to set aside details which are not significant and focus on the essence of the message he is trying to communicate. The fourth beast in Daniels dream relates to the fourth kingdom in Nebuchadnezzars dream, the Roman empire. In those days, as in our own, there are always those are too quick to conclude that the kingdom of God has come (see Matthew 24:4, 6, 8, 24-28; 2 Thessalonians 2:1ff.). If you need one see me after the service and I will get you a copy. So they came and stood before the king. It is good for us to understand the theology of the end-times, but we must approach it with reverence. Nebuchadnezzar's Threat One night, Nebuchadnezzar awoke frightened by a dream. Then He said to me, Son of man, stand on your feet that I may speak with you! (Ezekiel 2:1). Encouraged to do so, it savagely devours. Daniel 2: Nebuchadnezzar's Dream by Larry Murray King Nebuchadnezzar had a puzzling dream that no one could explainuntil God gave the interpretation to Daniel. (5) While the process involves wicked kings and nations and the suffering of the saints, the culmination is the establishment of Gods eternal kingdom. Take me to the king, and I will interpret his dream for him." We need to be waiting and prepared for His return. As the wicked prosper in their sin, it seems as though they can continue in sin without any fear of divine judgment (see Psalm 73:1-11; 2 Peter 2:3-4). If we go back to Daniel 2 and look at the statue in Nebuchadnezzars dream, we find that it too represented four kings and their kingdoms. From Daniel 2:4b to the end of chapter 7, the original text was written in Aramaic (the language of Babylon in that day). In other words, this persecution of the saints will not go on unchecked but will be defined to a definite period of time. When the court sits for judgment, his dominion is taken from him and he is destroyed forever. This beast is also unique among the four in that he grows 11 horns. 12 and he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. When the sin and oppression of evil men reaches a predetermined point, God will remove them and establish His promised eternal kingdom. Where it has not caused distress, it should have. In his vision, the statue collapsed and disappeared, because a mysterious stone struck it at its feet. Alexandra, the daughter of a rich British aristocrat, caught his attention. Specifically, the account of The Bad News at Belshazzars Banquet (not a bad title for that lesson) in chapter 5 was given to us so that we could better understand the prophecies of chapters 7 and 8. Unfortunately, the king did not heed the dreams warning, and his kingdom was taken away for a time. They will serve and obey Him forever. For this reason, I wish to clearly state the foundational presuppositions and principles on which this exposition of Daniel is based. His vision in chapter 4 should have produced more distress than it did. We could never predict the goals God has determined, nor the means He has ordained for history to reach them. These saints are the believing Jews of the tribulation, not the believers of the Church Age. King Nebuchadnezzar died apparently nine years before Belshazzar came to power. The three ribs in the bears mouth between its teeth most likely represent Babylon, Egypt, and Lydia, three empires conquered by the Medo-Persian empire. He had endured the training of the Chaldeans and he had lived his life in the service of a foreign king, at first the foreign king who had overthrown his country. (2) Why do you think Daniel summarized his dream when he wrote it rather than tell it in full (see verse 1)? And it was raised up on one side, and three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth; and thus they said to it, Arise, devour much meat! 6 After this I kept looking, and behold, another one, like a leopard, which had on its back four wings of a bird; the beast also had four heads, and dominion was given to it. La Habra, CA : The Lockman Foundation, 1995, [7]New American Standard Bible : 1995 Update. A revelation from God in his sleep discloses future events which Daniel finds most troubling. Daniel was terrified or alarmed by the scenes he had seen in his mind and desired to understand what they meant. Daniel uses the expression Son of man twice. A Vision of Judgment (Daniel 7:9-12) 2. As I stated two weeks ago the leopard was noted for its swiftness and the two pairs of wings suggests added swiftness beyond the animals own ability. It was said ( ch. Two weeks ago, after studying Revelation 13 and seeing how much it relates to Daniel 7 I decided we needed to go back and review Daniel 7 which we have not looked at since 2011. The next three are waking visions seen in the presence of angels, followed by an appearance of the Messiah - the Son of Man - to interpret the vision for Daniel. He only called on him in a moment of sheer panic when no one else could help, and only then because of the recommendation of the queen mother. His vision in chapter 4 should have produced more distress than it did. This is represented by the four heads on Daniels leopard beast. The fourth beast appears to differ from the other three in that he is more beastly, more powerful, more destructive, and more arrogant. At this point the revelation ended. The end of all things is at hand; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer (1 Peter 4:7). With the death of Nebuchadnezzar comes a change in the peoples attitudes, especially their leaders toward Judaism. Prophecy speaks not only of the joys and glories of Gods kingdom to come but of the suffering and tribulation preceding the eternal blessings of the kingdom of God. What is it that these men are testifying against You? 63 But Jesus kept silent. The beast was lifted up and made to stand like a man. The emphasis is positive. Yet, his emotional response was valid and changed little after the vision was explained more fully. (9) What is the relationship between Daniels vision in chapter 7 and the events described in Daniel 5? What it does not destroy or consume with its teeth, it crushes under foot, much like a bull in a china shop. He intends to make changes in time and in law. It is explained in a way that children can understand, describing his feeling as butterfly's in his tummy.Daniel's Dream takes you on an uplifting adventure with wonderfully expressivedescriptions of the characters, perfectly capturing bodylanguage and . When the Lord Jesus came to the earth, He often referred to Himself as the Son of Man, gradually making it clear that He was the Messiah who was God incarnate. 2 For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. When the iniquity of the blasphemous horn reaches full bloom and his appointed time to rule is fulfilled, God will destroy him, casting his body into the fire. From the context, it would seem that Daniels distress is the result of the wickedness and oppression of the world kingdoms which are represented by the beasts, and by the knowledge that the saints will be oppressed and even overcome for a period of time. 11 And I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spoke as a dragon. Daniel approached one of theses angels and began to ask him to explain to him the meaning or the truth concerning all that he had seen in his visions. Nebuchadnezzar became distressed when he received his first night vision (2:1) because he did understand some of his dream. in 1971. The first time in Daniel 7:13, he is referring to Messiah, who will sit on the eternal throne of His father, David. 7 For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. God is able to raise up kings and put them down. Jesus quoted the words of Daniel 7:13. So King Nebuchadnezzar honored God's men. Here is the perseverance and the faith of the saints (Revelation 13:1-10). This scene in Daniel is also similar to a prophecy recorded in the Book of Revelation: 4 and they worshiped the dragon, because he gave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?. One of those gaps is found in Daniel 7. (6) None of the kings or the kingdoms are identified. He wants to know more about this dreadful beast, different from the rest, especially in the destruction he wrought. The revelation of the writing on the banquet hall wall, already described in chapter 5, actually happened later, on the last day of Belshazzars life. Daniel obtaining some respite finds the dream. We should note Daniels distress in chapter 7 before turning to the other prophecies in Daniel, where we will find that prophecy very often produces distress. All distinctions of race and colour and nationality are stripped away and one apparently human figure represents the whole human race. Joyce C. Baldwin, Daniel: An Introduction and Commentary (Downers Grove: Inter-Varsity Press, 1978), p. 150. Daniels first inner turmoil occurs in chapter 7. The Son of Man had the power to forgive sins, as well as to heal a paralytic (Matthew 9:6). 11 Then I kept looking because of the sound of the boastful words which the horn was speaking; I kept looking until the beast was slain, and its body was destroyed and given to the burning fire. This kings boasting turns to blasphemy. His throne was ablaze with flames, Its wheels were a burning fire. 8 While I was contemplating the horns, behold, another horn, a little one, came up among them, and three of the first horns were pulled out by the roots before it; and behold, this horn possessed eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth uttering great boasts. The Septuagint renders, "And the king commended that the magicians, astrologers, and sorcerers of the Chaldeans be brought in to tell the king his dream. Verses 15-28 contain the divine interpretation of this vision. His thoughts alarm him, and his face pales. Just so, Christs suffering and glory is but a part of one coming. What God says, He will do. Bob is a pastor/teacher and elder at Community Bible Chapel in Richardson, Texas, and has contributed many of his Bible study series for use by the Foundation. The chapter falls into two major parts. 1. This little horn is more intelligent and more arrogant than the other horns. In Daniel's dream the Medo-Persian empire and it king Cyrus was represented by the bear. What role do they play in relation to the four beasts? If Daniel had been shaken by the dark side of his vision, he is reminded in the interpretation of the outcome of these eventsthe establish- ment of Gods eternal kingdom. The beasts are hardly worthy of prose, but the court of heaven deserves a description of the finest words. Daniel was told that the beasts are kings, but he was not told the identity of any of the kings. And the high priest said to Him, I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God. 64 Jesus said to him, You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you shall see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, AND COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN (Matthew 26:59-64). The death of this king brings about the end of his kingdom. If, in Gods eyes, a day is as 1,000 years and 1,000 years as a day (2 Peter 3:8), then the coming of our Lord has only been a few days from beginning to end. Old Babylonian Omen Text (VAT 7525) In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was troubled and he could not sleep. The emphasis of this brief interpretation falls not on the enemies of God, their power, their brutality, nor their boasting, but on the kingdom of God, its certainty and its permanence for all the saints forever. He surpasses those before him by speaking boastfully, then blaspheming, and finally seeking to overthrow Gods order. The ten horns, Daniel is told, represent ten kings who will emerge out of the fourth kingdom. This is what we need to know from Daniels vision, rather than the identity of the beasts. Now in the second year of Nebuchadnezzar's reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; and his spirit was so troubled that his sleep left him. 31-35). As the saints suffer at the hands of the wicked, it may appear all hope is lost. 16 At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him." (2:14-16) Notice Daniel's calm in the face of the king's rush to judgment. The message of this prophecy is really quite simple and may be summed up this way. His disciples were promised that they would share in His reign as King (19:20). Neither is prophecy written to make us happy or to feel good. Since the head of gold seems to describe the same king and kingdom as the first beast, it may not be too far afield to conclude that Nebuchadnezzar is the king represented by the first beast. 14 And he deceives those who dwell on the earth because of the signs which it was given him to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who had the wound of the sword and has come to life. Not only was he greatly alarmed and physically sick, but he says he also kept the matter to himself. Wherever I see the Scriptures speak of the coming kingdom of God, I find suffering closely associated with it. Chapter 2. Up to this time, it was simply a synonym for being human, a son of man. Nevertheless, Daniel tells no one, keeping the matter to himself and suffering a quiet agony over the future events God has revealed to him. 8 And all who dwell on the earth will worship him, every one whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain. Yet Gods covenant to David (2 Samuel 7:16; Psalm 89:14) stands and will ultimately be fulfilled. The statue has four parts; there are four beasts.
